We just got back from our follow-up visit with our pediatrician. She was very impressed with Charlie's rash. We talked about the steroids and benedryl and she looked him over and said he'll live. We're going to continue with the benedryl because it seems to help with the swelling, but the steroids we're going to hold off on because there's not much benefit and they can occasionally prolong the rash. She told us what to watch for with it getting more serious, but said at this point it was probably unlikely. She also said that it was her opinion that, although we are going to stay away from amoxicillin for awhile, it's probably the virus that started all the sickness that caused the rash and that usually this kind of thing is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so we're probably not looking at a repeat performance any time soon.

Finally, she sort of hesitated and asked if we would mind if she invited some of her colleagues to come in and take a look at this, because it's the kind of thing you usually only see in textbooks and she wanted them to see this perfect example of a rare rash. We laughed.

Go big or go home, right? :) never say our Charlie is one to do anything halfway!

I'll include an old picture of healthy Charlie at the end of the post, because he'll look just as adorable very soon (well, 7-10 days, anyway).

Love to all!

SECOND trip to the ER

So last night we got him up for his 9:00 benedryl dose and not only was he really puffy again, but everything below his rib cage had turned sort of an ashen purple-brown color underneath the hives. Once again, a call to the nurse line, and once again, instructions to go to the ER. This time we went to Children's (Josh was right, Becky was wrong. There! I said it!). The nurses who checked him in all had to gather 'round and see this amazing and rare sight. (Hey, Mablel! Come take a look at this!!) The first doctor we saw was a resident, and she was just about to check him in for an overnight visit when her boss came in and recognized what this was. He gave it a name, even: Erythema Multiforme Minor, which means an allergic reaction, but different than the usual allergic reaction. this could be an allergy to an infection, most commonly a virus.

The literature we got said, "The rash may last for up to 2 weeks but is worse in the first few days. It is multiple red, raise dcircular lesions, often with a dark center. It is likely to be all over and can cause swelling about the eyes, hands, and feet, but it usually not painful. It looks very bad but will heal without scarring in a few weeks"
I dont' know if you can tell from the picture, but there's really only a couple places on his little body that aren't red or purple.

But it's comforting to have a name for the condition, and even though there's nothing we can do since this doesn't respond to Benedryl or steriods, it makes us feel better to know what to expect. The doctor said it might get worse before it gets better, but that it should improve sometime in the next few days.

Thanks for all your prayers!

First trip to the ER

OK, in case there were any lingering doubts, yes indeed, Charlie is allergic to penicillin. As his lips, feet, and legs turned blue and he started shaking, we called 911 this morning and took an ambulance ride! It was all very exciting. A nebulizer, intervenous steroids and intervenous benedryl made him look more human again. He was very brave throughout the whole thing. I can't say as much for me and his mother. I was my normal 'chip off the old rock' and Beck's not much for needles. Now that Charlie is thoroughly drugged again, and Becky is reassured that she is an awesome mother, we're gonna survive!

....and the fun continues

Apparently Charlie is allergic to penicillin.....who knew?

Poor Charlie, Thank God for Grandparents!

While Charlie spent his day wiping snot all over grandma ...

Buddy displays his helpfulness by bringing him his paci.

At least he's feeling better now, but of course mommy and daddy are feeling a little like death warmed over and we had to call Nana for a play date on Sunday. We are so blessed to have our families close enough that we have support for times like that!!

not feeling well

so charlie's got the creeping crud that's going around, complete with ear infection and sleepless nights for both little boy and his mama. luckily for mama, grandma is visiting after not seeing charlie for almost a month, so the two of them have some catching up to do, which is distracting him nicely.

I love my new hat, but I don't feel so good.....

Such a big boy!

this morning charlie was just showing off all the ways he could be a big boy!
after breakfast i was washing off his high chair tray and he wanted to help, so i gave him the tray and asked him to put it over on his high chair (not thinking he actually would!). so he toddled over to the high chair and put the tray up on the chair. so then i asked him if we should go brush our teeth. toddle, toddle, toddle, over to the bathroom, hand up for the toothbrush. when he was done he handed it back to me and made the 'oo' sound that means he wants to blow out the candle, so we did. then i put him back down and asked him if he was ready to get dressed for the day. toddle, toddle, toddle into his room. he helped me pull off his pj feet (not actually that helpful, but he's trying) and then squirmed down in nothing but a diaper to grab his pants off the chair. we put on his pants and shirt and then he surprised me by walking over to the closet to throw his pj's in the dirty clothes basket for me! he is such a great companion, my little dude.

so check out the Fladung Family blog for pics of charlie with his little buddy Eli. scroll down to see quite a fashion show!!

I'm just getting used to posting pics as part of the blog. have patience, please, i'm learning :)

this is a picture of charlie the morning after daddy's "bang trim" before mommy took him to the professionals!

i really did appreciate daddy trying to help, but i have to admit, there were some tears involved.

i still think charlie has the best daddy in the world, though! josh is so helpful and so sweet and loving with him. i'll never forget the day he told me that he wanted bathtime and bedtime to be his time alone with charlie. i heard a significant amount of giggles coming from the tub that night and later when i asked josh what on earth they were doing, all he would say is "man secrets"

Welcome to our blog!

Well, we'll give this a shot!
Charlie is having a great week this week. He's wanted to cuddle a lot lately, which is so sweet! We had a play-date with Eli Fladung this afternoon and he had a great time.

He keeps saying things that I think might actually be words. He runs his truck into things and says "Crash!" pretty enthusiastically. Yesterday he learned how to say "tickle, tickle, tickle" and blow out candles (which he insists on practicing every time we're in the bathroom).

We love our Charlie so much! Thanks for checking out our blog
